Open cuts, sores, lesions, ulcers, burns and rashes
The conditions of transmission make it clear that it is possible for HIV to gain access to the body through open cuts, sores, lesions, ulcers, burns or rashes. These areas of the body should be protected from contact with blood, semen, vaginal fluid and with another person’s mucous membranes, because contact may lead to a high risk of HIV transmission. Due to their role in the body’s immune system, CD4 cells are close to these affected areas. Since they are also target cells of HIV, their presence facilitates transmission of the virus.
