Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)
The goal of post-exposure prophylaxis is to try to reduce the risk of seroconversion following exposure to HIV (broken condom, contaminated needlestick injury, etc.). This treatment must be begun quickly, within no more than 72 hours after exposure. A health care professional will evaluate the risk of transmission and the possible benefits of PEP before prescribing this treatment, which consists of a month-long multi-drug regimen. The existence of (and access to) PEP should never be used as a substitute for HIV prevention practices.
